Winter is here! I live in NH where the winter seems to last for 7 months (seriously, we’ve had snow in October AND April and every month in between!) Although it isn’t my favorite season there are sooooo many fun books to read about winter, snow, and snowmen!

One of my favorite authors is Jan Brett. She has TONS of stories that take place in winter! Her book The Mitten is on my MUST READ list for winter! There are several versions of the story which are fun to read and compare:
My favorite activity to do with The Mitten is to act out the story! I use a large sheet as the mitten. I give each child an animal mask that can be downloaded and printed from Jan Brett’s website {here}. The children that do not have a mask help to retell the story. Of course, everyone helps with the big sneeze at the end of the story! During the big sneeze I pick up the sheet high into the air – just like the mitten in the story. The kids love, love, love this activity! We do it over and over again during our “mitten” week!

I have several activities in my TpT store to use with The Mitten.
First is an emergent reader. This little book is perfect to help retell the story and focuses on the sight words the, is, in, my, are, and who.
Next, is a Write the Room activity. This set features all of the characters in the story. Hang them up throughout the classroom and have the children search for each one. When they find a character they write it on the recording sheet.
